Ledger Free

A free expense tracker app for co‑parents. Kids' costs, split fairly. No back-and-forth.

Ledger is a free expense tracker app for co-parents. Type in what you paid for the kids, just like a spreadsheet. It splits each expense, keeps a running balance of who owes whom, and lets you settle up whenever you like. Nobody has to keep score.

Free, and it will stay free. No sign-up to start. Works on any phone or computer; add it to your home screen and it opens like an app. Already using it? Sign in

How it works

Four steps, and the math is done for you.

Ledger works in four steps: type in what you paid, invite the other parent, watch the running balance, and settle up. It runs in your browser and saves as you go.

  1. Type in what you paid

The date, which child it was for, who paid, what it was and the amount. Each row saves as soon as you move on.

  2. Invite the other parent

Sign in with your email (no password) and send an invitation. You both see the same ledger and add your own expenses.

  3. Watch the balance

Each expense is split 50/50 unless you change it. The running balance always shows who owes whom, and how much.

  4. Settle up

Pay however you usually do, then record it with Settle up: the whole balance or part of it. The other parent can give it a thumbs up.

What's in it

Everything a shared spreadsheet does, without the arguments.

Ledger keeps the expenses, the splits, the receipts and the payments in one place both parents can see, and works out who owes whom after every change.

  • Works like a spreadsheet

Type straight into the sheet. No forms, no app to install, on a phone or a computer.

  • A split for each expense

50/50 by default. Change it for any one expense, like 60/40 for tuition or 100% for something one parent agreed to cover.

  • Receipts on every row

Once you've signed in, attach a photo or PDF to any expense. Scan a QR code to take the picture with your phone. Location data is removed from photos.

  • Settle up, or ask to

The parent who owes records a payment for any amount. The parent who's owed can send a request to settle up instead.

  • Updates by email

A short digest of what the other parent changed. Choose all updates, only settling up (requests, and payments made to you), or none.

  • Records when you need them

Download any period as a PDF or Excel file, with the balance carried in and the totals, or as a CSV of the entries. Every change is kept in the history.

Questions

Common questions about Ledger

Is there an app to download?

No download needed. Ledger works in your phone's browser. Add it to your home screen (Share, then "Add to Home Screen" on an iPhone; the menu, then "Install app" or "Add to Home screen" on Android) and it opens on its own, like an app.

Is Ledger really free?

Yes. Ledger is free, and it will stay free: our Terms of Use say so. A ledger holds thousands of expenses and up to 10 children, and you can keep using it for as long as you like. There are no ads.

Do both parents need an account?

Not to start. A ledger opens straight away in your browser, and you can begin typing in expenses. To invite the other parent, you sign in with your email address: there's no password, just a link or a 6-digit code. They sign in the same way to join.

How are expenses split?

Every expense is split 50/50 unless you choose a different split for that one expense. Ledger works out each parent's share and adds it to the running balance. When a share comes to half a cent, it's rounded so the odd cent goes to the parent who paid.

How do we settle up?

Ledger doesn't move money. Pay the other parent however you normally would, such as Zelle, Venmo, a check or cash, then record it with Settle up. You can settle the whole balance or part of it. Only the parent who owes records a payment; the parent who's owed can ask them to settle up.

Can we keep receipts in it?

Yes, once you've signed in. Each expense can have one receipt, as a photo or a PDF. Upload it from your computer, or scan the QR code and take the picture with your phone. Photos are re-encoded so camera and location details are removed.

Can I download our records?

Yes. Choose a period and download it as a PDF, an Excel workbook or a CSV file. Each shows the dates, children, who paid, the amounts, the splits and the running balance, which is handy for an accountant or your own records.

Which expenses should we share?

That's up to the two of you. Childcare, school costs, activities and uncovered medical costs are the most commonly shared. See what co-parents usually split, and the usual ways to split them.

What if we disagree later about what was paid?

Every entry is dated, can carry its receipt, and keeps a history of changes, and you can download any period as a PDF, Excel file or CSV. If you need records for a lawyer or anyone else, ask them what they'd like to see.

Does Ledger work out child support?

No. Ledger keeps track of shared expenses the two of you decide to split. It doesn't calculate child support, and its balance isn't a court-ordered amount.

Who can see our ledger?

The two parents in it. A small number of our staff can also access it, only for support, security, account management and legal reasons. We never sell your information, use it for advertising or use it to train AI models. The Privacy Policy has the details.
